Shaw Floors was founded in 1946 as Star Dye Company, a small business focused on dying tufted scatter rugs. In just over a decade, the company expanded dramatically and began finishing carpet under the Star Finishing Company moniker. By 1967, a holding company was formed with the purpose of acquiring Philadelphia Carpet Company. Approximately one year later, Star Finishing was added to the holding company, marking the company’s first step into the carpet manufacturing arena.
In 1971, the holding company went public as Shaw Industries, Inc. with approximately $43 million in sales and 900 employees. In 1985, Shaw joined the ranks of America’s largest corporations on the list of the Fortune 500 with more than $500 million in sales and nearly 5,000 employees.
Shaw is dedicated to creating a better future for their customers, their people, their company, and for the communities in which they do business. They pride themselves on great products and extraordinary service. Shaw is a company that believes in honesty, integrity, and passion. They are also extremely dedicated to environmental stewardship.
The Shaw Green Edge program validates Shaw’s environmental leadership through demonstrable progress. Shaw Industries contributes to hundreds of environmental initiatives throughout the company that have a positive impact on the environment, economy, and the community. The Shaw Green Edge is more than a symbol. It is a quantifiable measure of Shaw’s three-fold core strategy: initiative driven, value guided, and invested in long-term solutions. Wherever Shaw Green Edge appears, it represents Shaw’s commitment to progress by every means.
In 2013, Shaw became the first flooring manufacturer in the world to have its products Cradle to Cradle Certified, as well as one of the first companies in any category to do so. Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute is an international non-profit organization founded by William McDonough and Michael Braungart with support from Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Wendy Schmidt, and Brad Pitt. Cradle to Cradle was created to administer the Cradle to Cradle Certified Products Standard, a continual quality improvement system for transforming the making of things into a positive force for society, the economy, and the planet. Cradle to Cradle certified products account for more than 60% of Shaw’s $4.5 billion in annual sales. Shaw has made a commitment for 100% of its products to be designed to Cradle to Cradle protocols by 2030.
